How to Design a Small Bathroom to Look More Spacious

Small bathrooms don’t have to feel cramped but many people are unsure of the best way to design them to maximise all of the space available.

If you take advantage of clever storage, lighting, colour choice and reflections, the question of how to design your small bathroom becomes less intimidating! Below, we’ve outlined our favourite tips for designing a small bathroom.

Opt for clever storage solutions

Opt for neat bathroom fittings and built-in storage to really make the most of your small bathroom space. If, for example, you design a small bathroom to include a standalone bathtub or chunky cabinets, it’s likely that you’re wasting valuable space. Alternatively, you could take advantage of the space underneath your sink unit and include a cabinet or a set of sliding drawers there.

Choose light colours

This doesn’t mean that your bathroom has to be entirely white – a great way to make bathrooms fun but still light and spacious is through pastel shades. Alternatively, you could try black accents to add a bit of interest.

Include reflective surfaces

Most small bathrooms will have at least one mirror, but these can often be an afterthought over the sink. Instead, you could try having a larger reflective mirror which takes up a significant portion of the wall. Wall-mounted mirrored cabinets are another great option for small bathrooms as they offer both sleek storage and give the appearance of a bigger space.

Install bright lighting

This is a simple solution but it makes a big difference to the space. Dark and dingy lighting will make you bathroom appear smaller and uninviting. Bright LED ceiling spotlights are a good option when designing a small bathroom because they don’t take up much space in the room.

Choose a walk-in shower over a bath

When deciding on the fittings for your small bathroom, we would always advise opting for a walk-in shower over a traditional bath/shower combination. You might have your heart set on a bathtub but, for a small bathroom, this will be the thing that dwarfs the space. There are so many modern walk-in shower styles available that you can ensure luxury, even in a smaller room.

Use hooks, rails and open shelves

As well as clever built-in storage solutions, you can add additional storage to your small bathroom by taking advantage of hooks, rails and open shelves. These can be added as needed without taking up too much valuable space.
