Converting a shower room to a bathroom – what to consider
In recent years, the big trend has been for people to convert their bathrooms into shower rooms, removing the bath and instead installing a large walk-in shower cubicle with plenty of space. This is an excellent way of freeing up space in a smaller bathroom, which is sadly an all too common feature of many modern homes. Other reasons for converting a bathroom to a shower room include conserving water; showers use less water than baths and an ageing population who prefer to remain in their own homes but are finding it increasingly difficult to get in and out of the bath.
What this does mean for many young couples buying their first home and starting a family is that the lack of a bath may not be convenient with young children. Converting a shower room back into a bathroom can often seem like the best choice under these circumstances.
Will you lose space?
If you are considering converting a shower room into a bathroom, then it is a good idea to look at whether a bath will actually fit in the space. If it was previously a bathroom, then this shouldn’t be an issue. However, in general, a shower cubicle does take up less space than a bath so you will probably lose some space in order to complete the conversion. This is a crucial point to think about before you take the plunge.
Does it suit your needs?
If the reason you are converting an existing shower room to a bathroom is because you have young children, it might be worth considering how long you will really need a bath for. If you never use a bath and prefer a shower, then you will undoubtedly want to fit a shower as well, or if you don’t have the space, at the very least an over bath shower. You might be surprised at just how quickly young children can take to being in the shower, and when they are younger, a baby bath can be a great alternative.
Adding value
While shower rooms are undoubtedly popular, many people still prefer a more traditional bathroom layout with a bath where they can unwind after a long stressful day. By converting your shower room to a bathroom, you may not be adding much value to your home, but you will certainly open it up to a whole new selection of potential buyers.
